Night Tide – Anna Burke

Night Tide - Anna Burke - lesbian novel
Available at Bywater Books

If I were to keep lists of, for example, ‘best kiss’, one from Night Tide would be number 1. This second book in the Seal Cove Romance series by Anna Burke is so good! I really fell in love with the story of Lillian and Ivy 🥰.

The story of Lillian Lee and Ivy Holden is one of hate, rather than love, at first sight. From the first acquaintance at university, there is annoyance between the two. It has been enough years ago to put this period behind them. Until Ivy shows up as Lillian’s colleague at the Seal Cove vet office where Lillian works. That Lillian is not happy about this is to say the least.

Ivy has moved to Seal Cove to be closer to her family due to a medical condition. A condition that almost no one knows about. Let alone Lillian. Her story is intense and provides insight into such a situation. From the moment the two meet again, there is so much tension and resentment between them that you think: they so want each other, and at the same time: this can never work out. I think that controversy is so well written. And that is one of the reasons why I think this is such a beautiful and good novel.

Besides the resentment from the past that Lillian and Ivy feel towards each other, the contradictions are also enormous. Lillian comes from a family that has had to work their way up out of poverty. Ivy, on the other hand, comes from a very wealthy family who acquired their wealth through things Lillian can only feel contempt for. Lillian never misses an opportunity to make Ivy feel that way. Ivy is therefore only urged to lure Lillian out of her tent. You might want to slap them at some point 😉!

However, the attraction is constantly noticeable as an undercurrent. It turns out there’s something else going on between them that makes Lillian seem to hate Ivy. She tries to “get back at Ivy” for this but it backfires on her in the best possible way. The passion flares up and they have to do their best to maintain that they don’t like each other.

I can’t say anything about the best kiss I’ve ever read in a book. It is something you have to experience for yourself. Just like the steamy scenes in the book. Anna Burke is an exceptional writer. I love that she decided to write lesbian fiction. Her books have enriched the lesfic community. How she describes the world of Lillian and Ivy: their characters, the characters around them, the place where they live, the work they do, it feels so real, so close. It’s been a while since I’ve read this book, but when I think about it, it all comes back to me. Hmm, I think I’ll just read the book again. Delicious ❤️!
