The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - Taylor Jenkins Reid - novel

I would probably never have read this book if I hadn’t seen countless tweets about it. Tweets by the way from lesfic authors and readers. I became very curious and finally gave in to my curiosity. Oh, and I’m so glad I did. What a fantastic book Taylor Jenkins Reid has written with this. And what an indelible character she has created with Evelyn Hugo ❤️!

Magazine reporter Monique Grant has been inexplicably assigned to interview Hollywood icon Evelyn Hugo. The reclusive movie star of yesteryear has withdrawn from active life for years. But now she is ready to give full disclosure about her glamorous life full of scandals. And to tell all about her seven husbands.

Evelyn tells Monique about her life. How she managed to become a successful actress in the 1950s. About her friendships, about her many husbands, and about her great forbidden love. It turns out that Evelyn’s life has not been a bed of roses. She had to fight hard for her career, she also had to make sacrifices in life for it.

The biggest sacrifice Evelyn has had to make is that she has not been able to openly acknowledge her greatest love: co-actress Celia St. James. She is the common thread in Evelyn’s life. And partly the reason for certain choices she had to make in her life. During the interviews, Monique gets to know the great actress more and more, she finds out who Evelyn Hugo really is. And finally, why she was chosen for the interview…

It is funny. Does a book that mentions seven husbands in the title belongs in the lesfic category? YEs, it does. At least in the queer category. What a fantastically beautiful love story between two women. When I saw the tweets, I kept reading that everyone who had read the book ended in tears. And I was like, yeah ok, bring it on. Well, I’ve never cried so hard after reading a book 😭😭! Really cry! I’m not going to say why because that would be a spoiler. But wow, Evelyn Hugo…..what a woman! The book will also be made into a movie by Netflix. I so hope this is done with the respect the book deserves.
